Travelling is fun and its addictive. There are many ways to view and experience a new city. This post highlights different city tours that one can take. Some are free, some are budget-friendly, some luxurious. Read to find out 6 different ways to explore a new city!
1. Hop-on and off Tours
Hop-on and off sight seeing buses are one of the most popular ways to explore a new city. Most major cities has a hop-on and off bus service. Some bus tickets are valid for 24 hours and some for 48 hours. Hop-on and off bus services cover all the major tourist spots and provides free pick up and drop off from hotel locations.
Different countries different operators, yet a beautiful way to cover all major touristy spots. I will provide a review on each of the tours/trips taken in upcoming posts.
Take day tours to explore nearby cities. For as low as $20 you can get a bus ticket to experience local towns and nearby tourist destinations. I remember taking a Greyhound bus to Niagara from Toronto. It took me about 2 hrs to reach and the cost of the ticket was $20 that covered my return trip as well. (Find out more at Greyhound.ca)
I also took a day trip to the Grand Canyons from Las Vegas. Read about it here
Another amazing way to visit nearby cities is via train. 2-4 hours of train journeys are fun way to relax and enjoy the countryside.
3.Rent a car
This world has awesome scenic roads, tunnels, mountains, trails – explore them in a rented vehicle if you like. You will need an international drivers licence for that, but renting a vehicle has its benefits. Its economical in some areas and you can pace the trip as you like. Enterprise, Hertz, Rent-a-car, Avis, etc are some car rental agencies that have services across major cities.
Renting a bike is also a great option to explore a city.
This is such a great option. Walking tours are conducted in major cities in the presence of tour guides or locals. Its usually free.
Visiting local cultural events is another way of experiencing a new city, new culture. In Toronto, every year, there is a Doors Open Toronto Festival. In this festival, one can visit Toronto’s heritage locations for free.
Food fests like Taste of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, Canada) or UnCorked Canmore (Canmore, Canada) are free (entry-free) way of experiencing local delicacies.
How about exploring a city at night?
Some cities come alive at night. See picture below for my Las Vegas Night Tours. The trip that lasted 2 to 3 hours was amazing. The bus took us around the LV Strip and Downtown where we got to witness the Fremont Experience. The tour expense was $40 (2013)
Food Tours or Wine Tasting Tours are affordable and yet luxurious ways to spend time in a new city, experiencing local life.
Check out my night tour of Budapest via Danube river cruise
Hop-on and off service is my favorite way of exploring a new place. First couple of hours, I do a complete loop of the bus trip and thereafter I decide where I wish to be dropped off.
